ITV Emmerdale star Roxy Shahidi teases new romance for her character Leyla Harding

Emmerdale star Roxy Shahidi has teased a potential new romance for her character Leyla Harding on the hit ITV soap following the latter’s split from Liam Cavanagh

Emmerdale star Roxy Shahidi has insisted she wants her character Leyla Harding to have ‘another real love’ following the latter’s split from Liam Cavanagh.

Soap watchers will recall that Leyla and Liam parted ways in 2022 after only marrying in 2021. The soap couple had a tumultuous time in their relationship with the tragic death of Liam’s daughter, Leanna, who was murdered by Meena Jutla. Leyla then found herself shot by Meena, who was eventually arrested and sentenced to 75 years in prison.

Leyla struggled in the aftermath, turning to drugs to help her cope, which also created a strain on her marriage. Since the end of her marriage, Leyla has got clean and turned her life around. Earlier this year, Leyla had a short-lived fling with Caleb Milligan. However, since her divorce from Liam and Caleb fling, Leyla has been single.

Talking about her character’s future, Leyla star Roxy told Mirror and other press: “I personally think there’s one relationship that should have lasted and I personally think they should revisit. I can’t say who that is. It’s funny because I did the Emmerdale tour the other day – you show everyone around the village and you do a little Q&A. I did four groups and everyone said the same thing: ‘Oh, she should be with…’ and I was like, ‘I know!’

“I don’t want her to be happy happy, because that’s boring, do you know what I mean? I love the twists and turns. But I do think she needs another real love after the doctor. It was sad, the way it happened. They were so fun for so long and they got on so well.

“I think they provided a lot of enjoyable bits of comedy in between all the tragedy. And then it got really dark, really heavy. So I think a little bit of fun, but not too perfect and happy because then you’ve got no story.”

It comes as Leyla actress Roxy opened up about her co-star Matthew Wolfenden’s emotional ITV soap exit after 17 years. Last month, the village bid farewell to Matthew’s, 43, character David Metcalfe as he left the Dales for a new life in London after heartbreak.
