Emmerdale spoilers: Liam Cavanagh left upset as Chas Dingle opens up to Lydia about her cancer instead of him

There’s upsetting news for Chas Dingle (Lucy Pargeter) in upcoming Emmerdale episodes, when she’s told that she has triple negative breast cancer.

Chas was urged to go to her doctor after Liam Cavanagh (Jonny McPherson) felt a lump in her breast during an intimate moment together.

Because of her family history of breast cancer, with her mum Faith Dingle (Sally Dexter) dying of the disease just over a year ago, Chas was at first in denial.

‘She’s naturally very worried,’ Lucy Pargeter explained. ‘She saw her own mother ultimately die from breast cancer, so for Chas to receive this diagnosis makes it all the more poignant. Liam reassures her that it could be nothing but that she must book in properly for a proper check up with the surgery. So she does. Thankfully this advice from Liam does lead to her getting an appointment straight away.’

Emmerdale is working with charity Breast Cancer Now on this story. ‘I am more than aware of the huge responsibility with us telling this story,’ Lucy said. ‘I hope we can do it justice. If just a few people get help for breast changes that do not feel or look right, it could do some good too.’

Chas asks Liam to come to the appointment with her and he’s happy to be her confidante. But after the news is delivered, she struggles to cope and eventually asks him to leave her alone.

By herself, Chas allows herself to break down and cry as the full implications of the diagnosis hit home to her.

Later, Paddy (Dominic Brunt) drops their daughter Eve (Bella James) back home with her and he can see that something is wrong, but Chas puts on a brave face and pretends everything is fine.

Everything is not fine, however, and she’s struggling as Lydia Dingle (Karen Blick) can see when she comes to the Woolpack. Chas finally opens up to Lydia and tells her what’s wrong, glad to have a sympathetic person she can vent to.

Liam, overhearing this conversation, is glad that Chas is opening up to someone, but he can’t help feeling sad that it’s not him she’s choosing to talk to as he realises he’s become very fond of Chas – though he is now very low down on her list of priorities.
