Emmerdale fans in tears as much-loved character 𝕕ies

Emmerdale fans were in tears on Monday night as the death of a much-loved character was confirmed.

Paddy Kirk and Mandy Dingle were in the Woolpack discussing their engagement and the possibility of a party. But their good spirits were quickly dampened when Rhona Goskirk burst into the pub in tears.

Carrying a box of things, she said Pearl Ladderbanks’ grandson had been in touch to say the former veterinary receptionist had died.

Emmerdale residents and fans alike were devastated

Paddy and Vanessa Woodfield both burst into tears as Vanessa explained Pearl “was the receptionist, but also so much more than that”. Pearl actress Meg Johnson, died in July 2023, aged 86.

A joint statement from Johnson’s family, Emmerdale and talent agency Jorg Betts Associates at the time said: “It is with great sadness that we announce that actress Meg Johnson passed away peacefully yesterday evening surrounded by her family.

“Meg was a kind and wonderful lady, full of warmth and always with a twinkle in her eye. Meg had an outstanding career that ended with her playing Pearl Ladderbanks in Emmerdale from 2003.

“Meg had dementia for the last few years, but battled on personally and professionally regardless. She will be greatly missed by everyone who knew her.”

Watching the scenes play out on screen, many viewers took to X – formerly Twitter – to react to the news. Kelly said: “Awww RIP Pearl [broken heart emoji]” while Corey simply said: “Pearl [crying emoji]”.

Sam said: “It is even more sad when a character has died because the actor/actress playing them has passed away in real life. I loved Pearl” and Laura said: “Aww actually tearing up over Pearl, RIP Meg Johnson”.
