Danny Dyer says proposal was mistake after wife turned him down 4 times
Danny Dyer and Joanne Mas have been dating since they were teenagers – they married in 2016
EastEnders star Danny Dyer revealed that he got married ‘by mistake’ after he thought that wife, Joanne Mas proposed to him.
The actor, who portrayed Mick Carter in the BBC One soap, married Jo in 2016 after Jo bought a muffin which said ‘will you marry me?’ Danny excitedly thought this was a proposal, and Jo went along with it.
Speakingabout the romantic moment on James and Clair Buckley’s In Sickness and in Health podcast, Jo, 47, said: ‘It was Valentine’s Day and you were at home. I went to Millie’s Cookies, bought the last muffin, which said ‘Will You Marry Me’, but I didn’t mean it.
‘It was just the last one there. So I thought “I’m going to have that tonight.” Forgot to eat the muffin, left it downstairs, went to bed…He’s come up three in the morning, “Yes, yes, yes’” And I thought “What?” I was so embarrassed.

Jo added: ‘Are you telling me you weren’t going to propose to me?’
‘No, I wasn’t going to propose,’: Danny joked: ‘We got married by accident. What a romantic story.’
The couple started dating back when they were teenagers and finally tied the knot in 2016, after she proposed to Danny on Valentine’s Day in 2015.
They share three kids, daughter Dani, 27, who fans will know for winning Love Island in 2018, daughter Sunnie, 16, and son Arty, 10.
Danny and Joanne split briefly in 2009 and he’s openly spoken in the past of being unfaithful, telling Hello! in 2015: ‘I thought the grass was greener but it was horrible. I don’t want to go there again.’
Danny is perhaps best known to audiences for his work on EastEnders, where he played Queen Vic landlord and Carter patriarch Mick for nine years.
Mick vanished at sea over the Christmas period in 2022 when trying to rescue his one true love Linda (Kellie Bright) from the treacherous waves after a pregnant Janine Butcher (Charlie Brooks) drove them into the water.
Mick, under Linda’s instruction, saved Janine and their unborn child first before returning to the ocean to retrieve his L, unaware of the fact that she had safely made it to shore.
Fans have longed for Danny to return, with the Hollyoaks Later actor even teasing a comeback himself on social media last month after he responded to co-star Kellie’s post, which saw her sporting an ‘I Killed Keanu’ T-shirt following the Christmas EastEnders reveal that Linda did, in fact, murder Keanu.
